Wheelchair Rugby Classification

Wheelchair Rugby is a sport for quadriplegic (tetraplegic) male and female athletes. Players are classed into one of seven classes: 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5, depending on their functional ability. The higher classes are assigned to those players that have higher functional levels and the lower class players are players with less function.

Court: Wheelchair Rugby is played indoors on a regulation-sized basketball court. The basketball key area is replaced by a Wheelchair Rugby key eight metres wide and 1.75 metres deep. The part of the end line within the key is called the goal line, and it is marked with one pylon at each end.

Wheelchair Rugby is a unique sport combining some elements of Basketball, Handball, and Ice Hockey. The object of the game is to carry the ball across the opposing team's goal line. Two wheels must cross the goal line for a goal to count, and the player must have firm control of the ball when he or she crosses the line.

Volleyball Sitting History

While in England in 1591 a game was already being played which resembled volleyball somewhat, it would be 1895 before the American William G. Morgan developed the predecessor to modern Volleyball. In 1956, the Dutch Sports Committee introduced a new game called Sitting Volleyball, a combination of Sitzball - a game of German origin - and volleyball. International competitions have taken place since 1967 and finally in 1978 the International Sports Organization for the Disabled (ISOD) accepted Sitting Volleyball in its programme.

Volleyball Sitting Competition Description

The goal of the game is for teams to send the ball over the net through the crossing space and to ground it on the court of the opposing team. Each team is allowed to have up to three contacts with the ball, before it returns it towards the opposing team. The block is not considered as a contact.

Powerlifting History

The long tradition of Powerlifting in the Paralympics began at the 1964 Paralympic Games in Tokyo under the name "Weightlifting", where only lifters with a spinal cord injury were allowed to compete. Over the next few years, Powerlifting underwent a major transition to include other disability groups and incorporate rules identical to those of Powerlifting competitions for able-bodied. During the General Assembly in Barcelona in 1992, the decision was made to include only "Powerlifting" in the Paralympics rather than "Weightlifting".

Powerlifting Competitions Description

Athletes with a minimum disability must be at least 14 years of age and must have the ability to fully extend the arms with no more than a 20-degree loss of full extension on either elbow when making an approved lift according to the rules for their bodyweight.
